How to correct what ChatGPT says about your company

You cannot edit ChatGPT like a company profile. You can identify which kind of answer failed, correct the evidence it can reach, report serious errors through the right channel, and check whether the same buyer question improves over time.

There is no universal edit button

If ChatGPT describes your company incorrectly, there is no business profile where you can replace one sentence and publish the correction to every future answer. ChatGPT can answer from model knowledge, live web search, connected sources, or a mixture of context. The first job is to identify which answer you are looking at before choosing a fix.

OpenAI is direct about the underlying limitation: ChatGPT can produce incorrect or misleading outputs and can sound confident while doing it. Its accuracy and reliability guidance recommends checking important claims against reliable sources. For a brand, that verification should become a repeatable operating process rather than a one-time argument with the chatbot.

Preserve the bad answer before you fix it

Save the exact prompt, full answer, date, account or product mode, location or market if relevant, and whether web search was active. Capture the visible citations and the Sources panel. Then run the same question a small number of times without rewriting it. You need to know whether the claim is recurring, occasional, or attached to one retrieval path.

Do not begin by asking a friendlier question until ChatGPT says something correct. That only proves a different prompt can produce a different answer. The useful baseline is the buyer question that exposed the problem in the first place.

Separate search-backed answers from model-only answers

When ChatGPT uses web search, the response can include inline citations and a Sources panel. OpenAI's ChatGPT Search documentation explains how to open those sources. This gives you a concrete trail: which page supported the wrong fact, which page was ignored, and whether the citation actually says what the answer claims.

A model-only answer may have no inspectable source trail. You can still strengthen the public evidence for future search-backed answers and later model updates, but you cannot force an immediate global memory correction. Keep that limitation visible when someone promises an instant fix.

Classify the error

Most wrong company answers fall into a few practical buckets: your own site still contains the stale claim; a directory, review, article, or profile repeats it; the correct information exists but is vague or buried; two public sources contradict each other; or the answer appears unsupported. Classification matters because publishing another generic blog post will not repair a wrong pricing fact on an old comparison page.

Also distinguish a factual error from a positioning mismatch. If ChatGPT calls you an SEO dashboard when you are an AI brand-monitoring product, the sentence may not be fabricated. The public market may genuinely give the assistant stronger evidence for the wrong category. That is a positioning and proof problem, not only a fact-checking problem.

Fix the source you control

Create or improve one canonical page that states the correct fact plainly. Name what the company does, who it is for, the product or plan involved, the current limitation, and the date when freshness matters. Remove contradictory copy from old pages, update structured facts where they already belong, and link to the canonical explanation from relevant product, pricing, FAQ, comparison, or documentation pages.

Make sure the page is public, indexable, and technically reachable. OpenAI documents that OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT search. Allowing that crawler can make a page eligible for search results; it does not guarantee that ChatGPT will select the page or repeat the claim. Crawl access is the door, not the argument.

Correct third-party evidence at the source

If the wrong claim comes from a review, directory, article, partner page, or public profile, request a factual correction from that publisher and provide the canonical source. Update profiles you legitimately control. Where the market is simply thin, earn accurate coverage through customer proof, documentation, comparisons, interviews, reviews, and expert sources that can independently support the correct story.

Do not manufacture reviews, fake community discussions, or a network of nearly identical pages. The goal is consistent public evidence a buyer can trust, not a temporary pile of text aimed only at retrieval systems.

Report serious or harmful errors through the right channel

For an ordinary incorrect answer, use the thumbs-down feedback attached to the response and explain what is wrong. If content may violate OpenAI's terms or applicable law, use the in-product reporting flow or web form described in OpenAI's content reporting guidance. Keep screenshots, dates, prompts, and supporting documents, especially when the claim creates legal, safety, fraud, or impersonation risk.

Feedback and reporting are not guaranteed ranking or correction mechanisms. They are the appropriate escalation path for a bad response, while source correction and monitoring remain the practical path for the wider public story.

Recheck the same buyer question

After the source is corrected and available for recrawling, repeat the original prompt on a stable cadence. Record whether the wrong claim disappears, whether the correct page is cited, whether the wording improves, and whether the error survives on other answer surfaces. A single good rerun is encouraging; a repeated change is evidence.

This is the difference between a correction attempt and ChatGPT brand monitoring. Monitoring preserves the baseline, the source work, and the later answer so the team can tell whether the public evidence actually changed the story.

Turn the correction into stronger brand evidence

The best outcome is not merely making one false sentence disappear. It is leaving behind a clearer category page, current pricing explanation, stronger comparison, better documentation, corrected third-party profile, or more credible proof than the brand had before. That evidence helps a human buyer even if no assistant ever reads it.

Use the manual ChatGPT brand audit to run the first pass, compare ChatGPT brand monitoring tools if the work needs automation, and read AI source intelligence when the real problem is understanding which public pages keep carrying the claim.
